How therapy can help you

I aim to use my expertise and experience to support you with the issues you bring, through firstly helping you gain a greater awareness and understanding of how you live your life presently. We will then use this deeper awareness to increase your ability to live more choice-fully and with greater satisfaction

My training is in a Humanistic Psychotherapy called Gestalt but it is not necessary for you to know about this approach in detail, though I will be happy to answer any questions you may have about it.

Gestalt is a holistic psychotherapy which explores our experience as a whole; thoughts, feelings and body awareness. Neurobiological research has demonstrated the effectiveness of such an experiential, embodied approach to therapeutic healing and change.

Gestalt is a relational therapy.  It emphasise the importance of the relationship between client and therapist and focusses on the way that we create patterns of relating in our lives; to ourselves, to others and our environment. Sometimes these patterns become fixed in a way that no longer serves us well. Gestalt Therapy uses the idea of a “field”  to describe the web of different connections and experiences that can shape how we see ourselves, how we feel and how we operate in our lives. These can include for example; close relationships, both past and present; cultures in which we grew up or live presently and our relationship with the natural world. I may invite us to explore some of  these connections in your life, together, as part of our work.

I believe emphatically that therapy works best in an environment where people feel that their experience is respected and valued in a non-judgemental way and in an atmosphere of trust. I will aim to provide that backdrop in our sessions.cropped-ht1.jpg

Mindfulness is a way of learning to be open to our day to day experience by teaching us how to pay attention to our thoughts , feelings and sensations in a compassionate and non-judgemental way.

I use this awareness in helping me pay close attention to your whole experience and mine within the therapy session.

Where appropriate or with individuals who have a particular interest in this approach I teach mindfulness practises as an integral part of the therapy work.
